The best exercises to lose weight this New Years!

Updated: Jan 17, 2023

The best exercises to lose weight are when the clock hits midnight and the new year begins! Do you start your new year with the resolution of losing weight and getting into shape? To reach your goals and lose the extra weight you gained over the holidays, you must choose the best exercises to lose weight. Each person is different in many ways, so finding what works for you may not work for others.

What's Best: Weight training or cardio conditioning

The debate is always at the top of the list for personal trainers. When you work with weights, you are building muscle and strengthening bones. You increase your lung capacity and your VO2 Max while strengthening the heart as you do cardio. Both forms of exercise should be part of your fitness routine.

Weight Training to lose weight

If you know that weight training is the most crucial part of your program, you might like weightlifting more than cardio. Weight training is also known as resistance training. Weight training is when you push or pull resistance in weights, medicine balls, cables, bands, etc. The resistance makes the muscles work, and as you break down muscle fiber, you build back more and stronger muscle fibers.

Cardiovascular Exercise

When you think of cardiovascular exercise, different types come to mind. The key I always tell clients is to start with your favorite form. If you love running, then run. If you love spinning classes, then take those classes. If you start with your favorite type, you will stay consistent in doing the cardio work. Use the F.I.T. principle (frequency, intensity, and time) for general fitness frequency = 3 to 4 times per week, intensity = 60 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate, and time = 30 to 40 minutes workout in your heart rate zone.
